A SMALL BIT OF HOPE

There are flakes falling outside my window and all I can think is; I wonder if I should put more seeds out for the birds…

Enter, Susanna Leonard Hill’s 10th Annual Holiday Contest for children’s writers!

And you guessed it, my story is for the BIRDS!

Do you have a favorite bird?

I’m particularly fond of bluebirds, but please don’t tell that to the tufted titmouse, he’s a close second!

You know what you should do though? Read my entry story below and then head over to Susanna’s blog https://susannahill.com/blog and read all of the other fabulous entries!

Happy Reading!

You can thank me later.

Pitch: It’s a snowy Christmas night and a lonely child longs to help feed the hungry birds…

A SMALL BIT OF HOPE

(WC-250, Ages 6-10yrs.)

By, Angela Hawkins

Plinkity! Plank! Plunk!

You wonder if they can hear it.

With a small bit of hope you head inside to sip your warm cocoa and wait…

Anxiously,

Eagerly,

Longingly.

You begin to worry that maybe they are afraid of bright twinkling lights, or perhaps they can’t read words that say, “Free food for hungry, feathered friends!”

Little by little that small bit of hope puddles on your favorite flannel chair.

A flash of black!

As the good brown seeds begin to disappear, you wonder if they can see you, and you wonder if they like yellow seeds as much as brown seeds, and you think that maybe you should have put more seeds out; hungry crows can eat quite a lot!

And then you blink and they are gone.

Certainly, the swirling snow didn’t scare them away, and birds would never get lost in a metropolis of towering pines and evergreen balsams; maybe they didn’t need your help after all.

You should probably have knit them cozy red sweaters and tiny -toed stockings instead.

A flash of black!

As the good brown seeds swiftly disappear, your heart squeals with joy, and then you blink, only a small quick blink, and once again they are gone.

You rub your eyes with a small bit of hope, but gone is all you see, until…

A flash of black!

There, beneath the starry night sky, a grateful flock of flapping feathers offers a cawing of generous thanks, and a Christmas…

 Of hopeful friendship.
